Whether or not one agrees with the religion, the contributions made by the church to the development of American culture, particularly in the settling of the West, cannot be understated.

The church was a lightning rod for religious persecution by mobs throughout its earliest years, and subsequently moved from state to state seeking an opportunity only to worship freely as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States. After the assassination of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum, Brigham Young led the church across plains and the Rocky Mountains to settle in the Salt Lake basin.

President Young recognized the opportunities that existed for further developing the area by organizing colonization efforts throughout Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and the southwest. The Saints helped farmers throughout this dry region learn the same irrigation techniques they had picked up in their own travels, which helped to sustain many of these colonies as they grew into long-standing towns and cities of today.
