Mexico did NOT own parts of the United States, They did own large pieces of the North American continent, before there was a Unites states. Spanish explorers claimed, settled & defended most of what is the north American continent west of the Mississippi and south through MEXICO. This was the tradition of the day, to explore & take land from whoever was there, In this case the American Indians and some Frenchmen.
The US bought Louisiana and much of the Spanish holdings along with Florida. We also went to war over the rest & wound up with most of the southwest which was US territory and later became states.
