The Japanese export alot of merchandise (cell phones, radios, computers etc. etc.) And Japanese media can be seen and heard alot outside of Japan. Because of their exports (But not thoroughly due to) they are tied in with just about every country, therefore making Japanese a language that is widely used. And besides this, many Japanese have moved from Japan to other countries, spreading the language around.

Why study Japanese?

, I've been studying Japanese since 2003, and I've had a lot of ups and down with the language learning process. However, once you understand more than the basics of Japanese, it is a very rewarding experience! For example, you can watch anime in original Japanese. You can talk to native Japanese people. You can travel to Japan and understand their culture more through the language. The above are some minor examples. Also, Japanese can be widely used in international business. I hope this answers your question! Good luck. Diana
