The major effect of the Great Depression and FDR's New Deal on America was expanded government intervention into new areas of social and economic affairs and the creation of more social assistance agencies at the national level. The relationship between the national government and the people changed drastically. The government took on a greater role in the everyday social and economic lives of the people. The New Deal programs of FDR created a liberal political alliance made up of labor unions, blacks and other ethnic and religious minorities, intellectuals, the poor, and some farmers. These groups became the backbone of the Democratic Party for decades following the Depression. The Great Depression and the New Deal measure led to the domestic programs of JFK's New Frontier, and LBJ's Great Society and War on Poverty.

Franklin Roosevelt was the president during a time in which the US began the arms races and began to keep a standing army. He led in the creation of big federal government, huge spending, massive social programs and huge federal deficits. He learned that people who benefit from hand-outs will vote for you . He trusted the USSR and set up the Cold War , NATO and US involvement in European affairs. He was not the only one who pointed to these ways or kept his ideas going, but he was president for 12 years and set the federal government off in its current direction.
