Feudalism is a system in which a weak central government uses a hierarchy of power is used instead of developing a strong central power. England of the period before the Norman conquest had a strong enough central government not to need feudalism, so the system was a bit different. When the Normans invaded, the challenges to central authority were severe, and the Normans came from feudal France, where they were accustomed to feudalism. Se England became feudal for a while.
