Catherine suffered a stroke while taking a bath on November 5, 1796, and subsequently died at 10:15 the following evening without having regained consciousness. She was buried at the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. Palace intrigue generated several urban myths about the circumstances of her death that put her in rather unfavorable light. Because of their sexual nature, they survived the test of time and remain widely known even today.
She died of the after-effects of a stroke suffered while taking a Bath in November 5 or 6 of l796. As this was in the colder part of the fall, it is entirely possible that the Empress was buried in winter-weight clothing ( a common Slavic custom) and this may have been her splendid Uralian Tiger robes- which were recovered by Ghoulish NKVD vandals in l922, and are now in private hands in one of our Western states. So Catherine died indirectly in the bathtub.
