Why did they build Newgrange? That's a very good question! Because the tomb at Newgrange is some 5,000years old, archaeologists have been finding it very difficult to answer that question. Some things they have been able to deduct from findings are that:- the place must have been more than just a tomb- that it is aligned with the stars which makes it likely that it could have been an observatory- it could have been a place of ritual- it could have been constructed to demonstrate the power of the ruling elite who must have held a lot of knowledge of physics, building construction, climate and weather, astrology and moreBut, sadly, we will never know for sure as most artifacts made from materials other than gold, silver and stone, will deteriorate badly and leave few traces even after 500 years, and Newgrange is older than the pyramid of Giza.Regards, Colm
