The Sun is about 4.6 billion years old, and it is thought to be about half-way through its lifespan.

In about another 5 billion years it will expand rapidly and may consume the inner planets of the solar system. If Earth is not consumed by this, the least that will happen is that the atmosphere will be burned away and the waters will evaporate. The planet would become a desert and would be utterly lifeless.

Other than that, it could happen that an asteroid, meteor or comet might collide with the Earth, but it is unlikely - as scientific calculations lead astronomers to think that the gravity of the outer planets would help to deflect these from approaching too close to us.

Either way, it's not going to happen any time soon.

On the other hand.... when each of us dies, the word - for that person - ends.
