The Cold War was a driving force behind international events such as the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and the space shuttle program. It also played a role in McCarthyism, and films about a dystopian future with a totalitarian government were popular.

Each lynching harmed foreign relations, and "the Negro problem" became a central issue in every administration from Truman to Johnson. In what may be the best analysis of how international relations affected any domestic issue, Mary Dudziak interprets postwar civil rights as a Cold War feature. She argues that the Cold War helped facilitate key social reforms, including desegregation

The Cold War, a "war" of attrition and nuclear build-up between the United States and the Soviet Union, greatly shaped American culture by the people's emphasis on space and science to beat out the Soviets. The negative public perception of people outside the United States helped develop unity within the country.

Cold War politics and assumptions shaped American foreign policy in quite a few ways. One way that this happened was that it created structural changes in the media. Radio stations that were independents promoted more black jazz and singers over the white counterpart.

The Cold War caused American Society to grow up and realize that safety could be taken away in an instant. Air Raid drills were as common as fire drills with children instructed on the safest behavior in case of attack. Many bomb shelters were built for protection during the 1960's because of the threats of the Cold War.

Not too much of an impact, because the "baby boom" makers were still busy making babies. And the housing market was booming, especially in California...the logging industry in Oregon and California was pumping out lumber 24/7 for the new GI bill homes. Then the Korean War started in 1950...so everybody including pro Baseball players like Ted Williams (as one example) had to crank up his jet and fight in Korea. Americans were still getting over WWII, and were VERY NEW to the "Red Scare" in those years, to be much affected by it. And as you can see by the first sentences of this paragraph, Americans "had a life!" An they were VERY BUSY!

Q: Thanks for your Answer. but my question was after the impact on domestic politics not so much American citizens; what was happening in congress and what policies were introduced as a result of the cold war, that sort of thing?
