  • Vacuum tubes
  • Many kinds of different main memories: delay line, magnetic drum, electrostatic CRT, magnetic core, etc.
  • Small expensive main memory (equivalent of 1 byte cost $10 to $100)
  • Punched card or magnetic tape I/O
  • Different types of computer for scientific and business uses

  • Vacuum tubes
  • Usually magnetic tape I/O (punched cards generally processed off-line, translated to/from tape images, to reduce wasted CPU time waiting for slow card transports)
  • Variety of different main memories: Mercury delay lines, Magnetic drums, Williams Tube CRT memory, Magnetostrictive delay lines, Selectron tubes, Magnetic core memory, etc.
  • Poor reliability
  • On site engineer(s) from manufacturer to repair failures
  • Software either run one job at a time or in batches
  • No operating systems

Some first generation computers were still running at customer sites into the middle 1970s, long after vendor had dropped support, because of the difficulty of porting software to newer computers with different architectures.

First generation computers don't have characteristics.

The primary characteristic of first generation computers, by most definitions, is that they were built with vacuum tubes.

"they don't have characteristics"?? Really?

Everything has characteristics.

They were slow , large, ran with vacuum tubes , they generated a lot of heat and weren't all the efficient.

"17,468 vacuum tubes, 7,200 crystal diodes, 1,500 relays, 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors and around 5 million hand-soldered joints ... weighed 30 short tons (27 t), was roughly 8.5 by 3 by 80 feet (2.6 m × 0.9 m × 26 m), took up 680 square feet (63 m2), and consumed 150 kW of power" (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

5 difference of 4th generation of computer and 5th generation of computer?

This is hard to answer, because there is no industry standard for what a 'generation' is. It is entirely subjective. You will need to define a 'generation' before a comparison is given. IE, there are 3 generations of AMD Phenom II processor, and over 70 generations of AMD processors. There are five major generations in processor bitrate. There are over 400 generations of individual progressments in major computer technology. There are nearly 50 different generations of individual architecture design.

What are the storage capacity of 1st to 5th generation computers?

it varied significantly from computer to computer within each generation with large overlaps from generation to generation but the running trend has been for greater storage capacity in each successive generation.
