The Zimmermann telegrams were intercepted and decoded by the British and provided evidence of German attempts to negotiate alliances with Mexico and Japan against the United States. This revelation, along with Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare, helped to turn public opinion in the United States against Germany and ultimately led to the country's entry into World War I.
