Nearly ALL politicians, movie stars, and the common person relate ANY current conflict with Vietnam, because that was America's last major war. Operation Urgent Fury in 1983 (Grenada) was compared to Vietnam; so was Operation Just Cause in 1989 (Panama); as was Operation Desert Storm in 1991 (Iraq), etc. etc.
They certainly cannot be compared with a TOTAL war which was "declared" and used atomic weapons...such as WWII.
On Iraq's side during the Iran-Iraq War. Against Irag during Operation Desert Storm. Against Irag during Operation Iragi Freedom.
The Vietnam War, like Korea, WWII, WWI, were largely fought by conscripted (drafted) men. Desert Storm, and the current Irag conflict has been fought by an all volunteer military. The fact is that the majority of us that served in Vietnam, were RA (enlisted), especially in the early years,1960-1967. At wars end,the DoD stated that 54% of Vietnam Vets, were volunteers. A questionare was sent to Vietnam vets asking if they would do it again and 75% answered YES,even knowing the end result. So please get facts before posting. Vietnam was NOT largely fought by Draftees but volunteers. The ones that were drafted, fought and died as valorous as any troops of any war and that too is a fact.
It is not the general populace of Irag that is seeking reveng rather the followers of Husein and other radical Muslims that want revenge with the US government and military. See the link below for further information and other links to add to your resources.
Vietnam was the second "hot battle" of the cold war (communist vs free world). Korea was the first. Korea was won; the communist's were stopped at the 38th parallel by an armistice, still in effect today. Vietnam was lost to the communists. Vietnam was (as was Korea) supported by Communist China and the Soviet Union. Both of these wars had to be fought as "limited wars' (with boundaries) so as NOT to envolve either Communist China or the Soviet Union DIRECTLY, as had occurred during the Korean War. North Vietnam, as North Korea, WWII, WWI, etc. involved the fighting of a nation (country) which consisted of a government with a national flag, an army, navy, and air force. The U.S., and it's allies were trying to defeat the above "nations (countries)" by the "force of arms'' (military force), commonly called WAR. Currently, the U.S. and it's coalition, is NOT fighting a war against the country of Irag. There is no flag to capture. Irag is a POLICE ACTION in which stability is trying to be established. The dictionary describes a police action as, "...a relatively localized military action...against insurgents... held to be violating international peace and order."
