Fire has always been used to help carve out the wood from a log to create canoes around the world. We are fortunate that we have first-hand accounts and pictures of the Powhatan people using fire to help with this process. The fire must be controlled in some way, but essentially the interior area of wood was burned and then cut away with stone tools or even sea shells - burning makes this process much easier.
