The foremost goal of mugwumps was to enact civil service reform by removing from the party in power the ability to distribute federal jobs to its supporters. The name was created in 1884 and came from the editor of the New York Sun to describe 'fence sitting' republicans. It comes from an Algonquian word for a self-important chieftain.
