A fair amount did know how to read and write. My guess is about 30%-40%. Even today it is only about 70% literacy. The United States has about 25 million people unable to read and write today.

Well, like they always say practice makes perfect you know. I can actully write or type with my eyes close, but I think most people can't do this you know. Maybe you could this question as "How fast can you type or write?" Or maybe "Can you write or type with your eyes close?" Just my thought for this.
