He didn't actually RULE, since by then the British monarchy's role in Government was little more than it is today, but he WAS an important national figurehead. He did much to keep up the nation's morale during World War II, making daily radio broadcasts to the country, encouraging the British people in their dark years of fear, and regularly touring bombed areas of London and other parts of the UK to show his solidarity and sympathy with the civilian populace. When Buckingham Palace was bombed in 1940, he felt this enabled him to better understand the dangers the people of London were livign through night after night, and declared "Now I can look the people of the East End in the face". He was seen by many as a father figure during the War, which is why there was so much grief and anguish when he died in '52.
