Although not a Christian, Thomas Paine described himself as a Deist; he believed in a God so he was not an atheist.

Paine was, however, extremely critical of The Bible and rejected the notion that one could arrive at truth through revealed scripture. He is sometimes thought of as an atheist by Christians who are unhappy with his views that their religion was "the study of nothing."

In his book "The Age of Reason", Paine set forth his belief that the Bible was not the revealed word of a god, rejected Christianity and stated his case, as a deist, that nature was enough evidence for the existence of a deity. Paine stated in the book that revelation was only revelation to whomever a deity interacted with directly and that it was not incumbent on him to believe the Bible, as he considered it "hearsay".

No.

Thomas Paine was not a christian, he was a Deist. Although he accepted the existence of a God, he rejected Christian orthodoxy (methods, pratices, beliefs, etc.).

quote, '' i wish with all the devotion of a Christian, that the names of Whig and Tory may never more be mentioned.''

one of the great atheist lies is that the founding fathers were not Christian, they were not Christian doctrinaires, that is true, but all, repeat ALL of their spirituality was Christian based. and there is irrefutable evidence to back that up.
