He did not land in what we today call the United States, but he did reach what is today part of the Caribbean-- the Bahamas, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, for example; these areas are often referred to as part of "the Americas" (north and south America). At the time he did not realize what he had found-- he thought he had landed in India.
Historians believe Columbus never set foot on the mainland of North America. When he landed on San Salvador, he named the inhabitants Indios (Indians.) Historians have believed that Columbus first made landfall in the New World on the island of San Salvador, on 12 October 1492. Today, some historians are not sure that the first landing was on San Salvador, but one of the other islands in the area.
