If a child was born a slave they stayed a slave. Even the children of white planters and African American women were kept in slavery. Many children as young as two years old were sold away from their mothers. The mothers got no medical attention while pregnant and would often have a child while working in the fields and then go back to work. I read one account about a group of mothers was working in the fields so they placed the babies in a trough type thing to hold the babies while they worked. The south has sudden rain storms and one came up while the babies were in the trough and before the mothers could get back to them all of the babies had drowned from the rain.

Any child born to a slave was also a slave. When the shipment of slaves was outlawed the plantation owners bought and sold the children and grandchildren way from their parents. Children as young as 2 years old were sold.
