Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, KG, GCB, DSO, 17 November 1887 - 24 March 1976), nicknamed "Monty" and the "Spartan General" was a British Army officer.
In World War II, the British general known affectionately as "Monty" was in fact Bernard Law Montgomery. Achieving the rank of Field Marshal by the time the war ended, he was well-known as a successful, if also difficult, leader of British and Allied forces. After the war, he served as the Chief of the Imperial General Staff of the United Kingdom, among other lesser posts.
