Bloody Mary was Elizabeth I's older sister. She was born on 18th February 1516, became Queen of England on 19th July 1553 and reigned until her death on 17th November 1558. She was called Bloody Mary because during her reign nearly 300 so-called heretics were executed for failing to follow Roman Catholicism.

Bloody Mary was actually Mary I, daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. When Henry died in January 1547 his son by his marriage to Jane Seymour became King Edward VI. Edward was only nine years old at the time, and sadly died in 1553 at the tender age of fifteen. Upon his death Mary became Queen and reigned until her own death in 1558. Upon Mary's death her half sister became Queen Elizabeth I. Mary was nicknamed Bloody Mary due to the number of Protestant martyers she had burnt to death during her reign.
