The idea of having a military academy to provide officers for future campaigns was that of Alexander Hamilton so it is only natural that they honor him in this way. He expressed the ideas of the need for such an institution when he was Secretary of the Treasury during George Washington's administration. He probably should have consulted the Secretary of War first.
