from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Famine_(Ireland) The Great Famine (Irish: An Gorta Mór lit: The Great Hunger[1] or An Drochshaol, lit: The Bad Life) was a period of starvation, disease and mass emigration between 1845 and 1852[2] during which the population of Ireland was reduced by 20 to 25 percent.[3] Approximately one million of the population died and a million more emigrated from Ireland's shores.[4] The proximate cause of famine was a potato disease commonly known as late blight.[5]In the 1840's
During the Great Famine of the 1880s the population of Ireland was halved from 8 million to 4 million. 2 million people died from starvation and disease (the plague) and 2 million emmigrated, mostly to England and America. 1845 or 'Black 45' saw the greatest number of deaths, though emmigration continued on long after this date.
in Northern Ireland the percent is about 55-58% in the Republic it is about 3 to 4%
Do you mean What was life like before the Irish immigrants before they fled or after they left?If you mean before they left then they had several main problems:1.) The poor system of land tenure whereby managers employed by landlord would divide up the land and charge proportionally higher rent per sq. metre.2.) Obviously the blight of fungus that killed the potato crop - most people were subsistence farmers so all their food died with the potatoes.3.) Lack or fertile and useful land especially in the west.4.) A very conservative government in England with Laissez Faire policies and the coldly logical and anti-interventionist Charles Trevelyan in the Exchequer.Really life was pretty awful and they weren't getting much help from Westminster because they wanted to keep grain in England to prevent famine there. If you mean what was life like where they went I'm less sure but I do know that many were successful in getting work in England and America especially. 1.5 million Irish emigrated to America during the famine and it became a hotbed for revolutionary Fenian nationalism later in the century. Certainly if one succeeded in getting work in another country one would be a lot better off than staying in Ireland.
1840-1860 More than 4 million immigrants arrive in the United States. The Great Potato Famine of 1845-1850 prompts a surge in emigration from Ireland. The defeat of the Revolution of 1848 brings German political refugees to the U.S. The Gold Rush in 1849 draws people to California from other parts of the country. In 1855, New York State opens Castle Garden immigration station in lower Manhattan. In 1858, economic depression and famine in Sweden cause large-scale migration to America.
