Because the body starts to break down the medication as soon as it's swallowed. The active ingredients temporarily block the pain receptors - so the pain decreases. However - this is only temporary. If painkillers were to permanently block the receptors - the body would have no way of responding to a new source of pain !

I am experiencing shoulder pain and am looking for ways to get rid of it.?

There are plenty of simple remedies for relieving shoulder pain without the use of medication. If you lie on your side, try to get used to sleeping on your back or stomach to keep stress off of your shoulder while sleeping. Apply cold compresses followed by heat compresses for 10 to 30 minutes a piece daily. Wear a shoulder brace when using your arms for strenuous activity.

When you have legitamite pain and will only worsen in time but use more than prescribed meds What do I do about the severe pain if I come clean?

Do you want to come off opioids completely? It depends where the pain is but there are other options such as anti-inflammatory medications, implantable pumps, nerve blocks, etc. Also some people get relief from physical therapy, massage or acupuncture. Depending on what you take now you can switch to a long acting pain medication such as MS Contin or Oxycontin and then you would likely require smaller doses of a short acting medication for breakthrough pain. You may also need to take Methadone during the process of coming off your meds. It's very important to see a doctor who specializes in pain management or go to a pain clinic where they are experienced in dealing with different kinds of pain and medication issues. Most regular health care providers are not fluent or comfortable with managing complex pain issues especially when opioids are involved. It would be likely in that case that you would not receive adequate pain management and would end up in the same situation you are now. Good luck!
