Serotonin is a chemical found in the nervous system. It helps the nerves transmit messages back and forth, and is responsible for things like memory and learning, sleep, appetite, mood, temperature regulation, and muscle contraction. People suffering from depression have been shown to have lower levels of this chemical. This would explain the feelings of sluggishness, slow mental processes, and sleep and eating habits.
