I believe what you are trying to figure out is the benefit that this action provides. Several benefits can be acheived through this mechanism of release, such as allowing someone who has to take several pills a day (i.e. paracetamol) for pain/inflamation relief, to only take one. If the person were to take all the medication they take in one day, in one dose, in its normal form - they would damage their liver (overdose). Time release allows the medicine to be slowly released throughout the day, at a controlled rate. The mechanism is also used in narcotic medications, as fast acting narcotics, released quickly into the body can give the user a "high", making them more likely to become addicted to the medication. An good example is Phentermine - (a weight loss drug). It is an amphetamine style drug, and to prevent abuse and potential addiction - the drug is coated in resin that only allows the body to absorb it at a certain rate. Hope this helps
