COUGHFree Cough Syrup by Heel, Inc. can be purchased through 1-800-Petmeds for about $15. However, most cases of kennel cough are mild and will resolve in about 10 days. Older dogs, pups or those recovering from an illness or surgery should be taken to a vet if kennel cough develops as it can progress to a more serious condition.
Contact your vet.
A dog with a cough can have some serious problems going on, so you should see the vet, especially if the dog is around other animals that might catch something like distemper or "Kennel cough" (Bordetella), that are highly contagious infections that cause coughing.
Other things that can cause coughs in dogs are heart or respiratory diseases, heart worms, etc. and these can be fatal if untreated. Don't assume it is just a cold like when humans cough, it may be something that needs real treatment or isolation from other animals.
You dog could have kennel cough if in a kennel dogs usually do not cough, when they do it could be heart trouble, trouble with the larynx, or something in their throat To be on safe side go to the vet, any med's you give without vet's knowledge can harm the pet especially if its heart trouble, so you see you cannot do any med's.

You should never give human medications to dogs - dogs do not react to the medications the same way people do. In particular, you should not give an antitussive (cough suppressant) to your dog if he is coughing as the coughing is his body's way of getting disease out of his lungs. If your dog is coughing, you should take him to the veterinarian for evaluation - there are several common causes of coughing in dogs (most notably "kennel cough") that need to be treated with antibiotics.
Most packets say "consult a doctor for peoples under 6yrs old"
Wait WHAT?
Yes, there are no ingredients that will interfere with each other if you give your child Penicillin and Tixylix cough syrup at the same time. These 2 medications are known to work well together when a child has a cold with a fever and cough.
You CAN'T!!!!Tylenol & Codeine are not meant for children!!!!
If you are concerned about your cough, call your doctor's office or insurance advice nurse to discuss your symptoms and see if they want you to set up an appointment. If it is a minor, but bothersome, cough associated with a cold or flu, go to your pharmacy. There is a wide variety of cough syrups sold over-the-counter that are formulated to treat different types of coughs and other symptoms. Your pharmacist can help you find the right one for you. There are certain people who seek a prescription for cough syrup because if they take more than a prescription dose the ingredients give them a "high." This can cause headaches, nausea, and if overdone, serious complications. Please do not use cough syrup for entertainment, or as a way to escape from the stresses of life. If you are tempted to give in to peer pressure please talk to your school counselor or nurse; or even better, your parents. If you are using cough syrup as an escape, please talk to a friend, family member, therapist, or spiritual adviser. [Note: I am not a medical doctor or pharmacist.]
the answer may vary considering the size of your dog and the amount adminstered to him. i can't think of a reason to give a dog cough syrup besides coughing. i would be sure a little amount won't hurt dogs are strong creatures with strong bellies. i do not recommened high doses they may cause doggie hallucinations. and UFO sitings!
Our dog has recently returned from the kennels with Kennels cough. We have been using Benylin tickly cough medicine which was recommended by the vet. It has stop her coughing as frequently.
