Many of the medications used in anesthesia, such as Opioids or "pain medication" decrease peristalis (movement) of the GI system or bowels. In addition to the medications much of the constipation is actually a result of the surgery for which you are having the anesthesia for. When your body undergoes stress it shunts blood and nutrients to your most vital organs, such as your brain and heart, and away from organs such as your GI system or skin for example. This slows the function of your bowels which then causes constipation.
There are a number of medical conditions that might require a patient to have an enema. These include severe constipation, cleaning the bowel prior to surgery, emergency blood expansion and occasionally an enema is used to give a general anesthetic.
