Mainly the hip bones which are lower and wider in females. The pelvis has a wider opening to allow for a child's head to pass during birth. Also, females have smaller and more rounded shaped bones then males. The bones of males tend to have more prominences on them, like jaws are more square and eyebrow ridges are more pronounced. Men and women, contrary to popular belief, have the same number of ribs.

See the Related Links for "www.bartleby.com: The Pelvis" to the bottom for the answer. For information on ribs and proof that men and women do have the same number, you can go to http://Biology.clc.uc.edu/Courses/bio105/ribs.htm.

You need to have A good understanding of the skeleton of both sexes. The female will generally have A less prominant brow line above the eye orbits and the pelvic area is A little different as well. The pelvic opening is oval in a female from puberty on.

The male and female pelvis are different so can aid in differentiating between male /female skeletons.

The female pelvis is much wider (for childbirth) and the pelvic inlet is round. The symphysis pubis has an obtuse angle.

The male pelvis is much narrower than the female with a heart shaped inlet. The symphysis pubis has an acute angle.

Female skeletons are slightly shorter, with smaller hands and feet, and bigger hips. No major differences otherwise.
