The black death, or bubonic plague, was caused by a bacteria, thought to be Yersinia pestis.
In the days of the plague no one new that it was caused by rats and fleas. They thought it was caused by many different things e.g Swearing, Drinking alchol on and Sunday etc. They tried to prevent the plague by not doing these things but the plague wasn't caused by that do therefor they didn't prevent the plague.
Count Orlock initiated a plague in the city of Bremen due to his feeding. It wasn't explained what it was exactly however.
Some thought there was something in the water that they were drinking, and others thought that those that didn't believe in God got the plague.

People tried to stop the plague, but they didn't know what caused it. Medical science at that time was very primitive. Some people thought at the time that it was caused by God's wrath, but in fact it was most likely caused by infected fleas carried by rats.
What Bubonic plague caused an rapid spreading disease
There were lots and lots of different beliefs about the plague; people were so scared because they weren't sure what caused it. Some believed it was a punishment from God, some believed that foreigners or those who followed a different religion had poisoned the wells, some thought that bad air was responsible, some thought the position of the planets had caused the plague. All these different beliefs led to some strange attempts at escaping the plague and some even stranger cures. cw: Probably it was spread by the fleas on rats; hence, the love of cats.
