Horses originated 55 million years ago when the North American, European , and Asian continents were still attached to one another. But they developed most on the North American section of the land mass. Once the land separated many horses fled to the Eurasian continent and died out in North America, only being brought back thousands of years later by the Spaniards.

My original question was: where did horses first came to America not why. The answer is: They came from Spain in the 1500's, brought in by the Spaniards, not by themselves.
