The ovary only has unfertilized eggs. The egg ripens in the ovary and is released during ovulation. If the egg encounters sperm after it has been released, it may become fertilized and result in a pregnancy. (Sperm can hang around for up to about a week, so havign sex several days before ovulation can still result in a pregnancy.) If the egg does not become fertilized, it signals the uterus lining to break down and the woman has her period, usually about two weeks after ovulation.
The hen will lay eggs either way, she will lay more if you have a rooster and the eggs will be fetilized
