Disease theory of the Middle Ages blamed bad air for a lot of illnesses, and the Bubonic Plague was not an exception. Some people believed breathing the air that had been near victims was enough, others believed bad odors were to be avoided. Doctors blamed the gasses that had come from swampland, or smells from unburied bodies or bad sanitation.
