A health hazard is a material, condition, activity, or situation that could cause injury or illness to a person.

We know what many of those hazards are, and there are many that are unknown. Sometimes we find that some thing or place is a health hazard only after enough time has passed to see a pattern of illness emerge (Love Canal). There are many substances that are used in various segments of industry that need to be handled with care, because exposure to them is dangerous. Generally, we do a great job in the US of monitoring substances and manufactured goods in order to protect the population. It is inevitable that some hazards will be harder to detect, and sometimes harder to correct.
