How do you use a tooth brush?

There are many uses for a toothbrush. The most common use for a toothbrush is to clean your teeth. You can first wet the toothbrush under a sink or fountain of some sort. After the bristles of the toothbrush are slightly moist, you open a tube of toothpaste. Other products can be substituted for toothpaste, such as a homemade bicarbonate solution. After you have prepped your tube of toothpaste, you slowly squeeze a small amount of the paste onto the top of the bristles of the toothbrush. The optimal size for this paste is to be approximately the size of a standard pea. Too much toothpaste and it is bad for your teeth because there are small hard particles in the paste which, in large quantities, could damage your teeth. Too little toothpaste and it would not be enough to adequately foam up and cover all of your teeth. After applying the toothpaste to the toothbrush, you should close the tube of toothpaste. Then, you insert the toothbrush into your mouth and move it to and fro, rubbing the bristles against every side of each tooth. This should take about 2 minutes. After you are done brushing, you can rinse out your mouth with some water. Next, you should clean the brush by placing it under running water and rubbing the bristles with your finger. Then you can let the toothbrush dry on a nice, clean area until the next use.

The Prophet Mohammed introduced the use of the miswak (toothbrush) to the middle east about 1,300 years ago. A Japanese writer who traveled in China described toothbrushes in about 1200 AD. The English word toothbrush dates back to at least the late 1600s. The modern toothbrush with a bone handle and bristles was mass produced beginning in about 1840. Natural fibers replaced animal bristles in 1938.

The Chinese have used the bristle toothbrush since 1498, during the reign of the Hongzhi Emperor (r. 1487--1505) of the Ming Dynasty. The idea is thought to have been brought to Europe by Europeans who had traveled to China. The earliest identified use of the word "toothbrush" in English was in the autobiography of Anthony Wood, who wrote in 1690 that he had bought a toothbrush from J. Barret. Mass production of the toothbrush began in 1780 when they were sold by a William Addis of Clerkenwald, England.
