Skeletal muscle is striated (when looked at under the microscope, striations or stripes can be seen). It forms the muscles which help to move bones and joints and is voluntary, or under our conscious control. It is stimulated by impulses from the brain or spinal cord.

Smooth muscle (or visceral muscle) is involuntary, meaning that it is not under our conscious control. It is stimulated to contract by nerve impulses, hormones and metabolites. Smooth muscle is found in the walls of hollow organs such as blood vessels, parts of the respiratory tract, in the urinary bladder and the uterus. It helps to regulate the diameter of blood vessels and respiratory tracts, it propels food along the digestive tracts, and it expels contents of the bladder and the uterus. Structurally, it is non-striated.

Explain the difference between the two types of skeletal muscle tissue?

Skeletal muscle tissue differs from cardiac tissue in that skeletal muscles are striated muscles that require conscious stimulation to act, and cardiac muscles are smooth and basically run "automatically".

What is the difference between the three muscle tissues?

The differences are that one is smooth, one is cardiac, and another is skeletal.

What accounts for the difference in appearance of smooth and skeletal muscle?

involentary

Smooth muscle tissue

What are the 2 main types of muscles and what do they do?

The two main types of muscle are skeletal muscle and smooth muscle. There is also cardiac muscle but that is only found in the heart so cannot be classed as a 'main type'.The obvious difference between smooth muscle and skeletal muscle is that smooth muscle is not under conscious control whereas skeletal muscle is.Skeletal muscle is used to move the skeleton and smooth muscle is found on the walls of structures and organs.

Which of these cells are likely to have multiple nuclei skeletal muscle cardiac muscle smooth muscle or neuron?

skeletal smooth muscle neuron

What are some different types of muscles?

There are three muscle types, skeletal, smooth and cardiac. Skeletal and cardiac are both striated muscle, whereas smooth muscle is not.

How is cardiac muscle similar both muscle smooth and skeletal muscle?

Cardiac muscle tissue, like skeletal and smooth muscle tissue, can undergo hypertrophy.Unlike both smooth and skeletal muscle, cardiac muscles have cells that branch.
