The autonomic nervous system is part of the Peripheral Nervous System, or PNS.

The autonomic nervous system is responsible for involuntary movements, the smooth and cardiac muscles. Sympathetic (fight or flight) and Parasympathetic (rest and digest) are branches of the ANS.
