The spinal cord is the pathway for information connecting the brain and the peripheral nervous system. The main function of the peropheral nervous system is to connect the central nervous systems to the limbs and organs. So basically if there wasn't something protecting the spinal cord then it could be damaged and the function of your limbs and some organs could be messed up.
