Normal blood pressure is 120/80 in the average healthy adult. But this varies according to age, size, physical build, and other factors (including hereditary ones). Unhealthy blood pressure is a wide variance from the normal range, in either the systolic (heart pumping) or diastolic (between beats) readings, or both. Hypotension, or low blood pressure is approximately 90 or below systolic, 60 or below diastolic. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is considered 140 and above systolic, 90 and above diastolic. Blood pressure readings are always expressed as two values, one high and one low, representing the squeeze (systolic) and relax (diastolic) phases of the heart's pumping.

The units of blood pressure are millimetres of Mercury - that might seem a strange kind of measurement but it's really just seeing how far up a tube the pressure can push a column of mercury. So the full expression is, for example, 120 millimetres of mercury or 120 mmHg.

Normal blood pressure is a reading under 120/80. Pre-hypertension is a reading between this and 140/90. High blood pressure is anything over this - that is unhealthy. This is because high blood pressure (or hypertension) can cause health complications if prolonged.

It really depends on how your health is otherwise, but generally speaking under 140/90 is acceptable. If you're worried, go see your GP/Family Doctor.

If you try making an appointment with your doctor or the nurse at your surgery and ask for an NHS health check, you will have your blood pressure checked.

Your husband has aniexty and keeps taking his blood pressure every 5 minutes will this cause him to have a aniexty attack?

If your husband is that concerned with his blood preasure and it is high, I would imagin that he would experience anxiety which in turn will raise his blood preasure. The white coat syndrome is what they call high blood preasure at the doctors office. We have all at one time or another experenced the doctor /nurse needing to take our blood pressure more than once during an office visit. The reason is your anxiety is high when you first are examined and therefore this causes a rise in your blood preasure, so they wait a little while talk with you, wait for you to become more relaxed and take it again, hence the name 'white coat syndrome'. Some doctors suggest that their patients take their pressure at home or at the drug store because they may be more relaxed and their blood preasure will be lower. So... relax, don't obsess over it as your anxiety will raise your blood preasure and you may suffer from an anixety attack. cheyzer
