Vitamin D deficiency in children can result in a condition known as "rickets" which is essentially abnormal formation of the bones. This is because vitamin D is responsible for calcium and phosphorus absorption, both of which are essential to bone development. A child with rickets will usually develop a curved spine if under 2 years of age (ie, not yet walking), and bowed legs if over 2 years.
Vitamin D deficiency later in life could be a cause of osteoporosis (softing bones), and has been implicated (but not yet proven) as a cause of a number of other maladies including multiple sclerosis and seasonal affective disorder.
You could get a disease called rickets if you have a Vitamin D deficiency.
