Water does not directly help hiccups but while focusing on drinking the water your diaphragm relaxes. Based on my personal experiences, water does not help hiccups. Neither does a good scare or stand on your head. The only thing I know that works is a teaspoon of dry sugar. What is the science behind it, I have no idea; but I can swear in court that it have work each and every time.

The mechanism of action that causes hiccups is the result of a diaphragm spasm. By holding your breath, drinking a full glass of water and such you cause the diaphragm to relax and therefore stop the spasms and hiccups.

you didn;t even tell us what the heck you DO WITH THEM, but for your sake, i'll tell you its because you believe it will work. every time, its stopped the hiccups, because what your brain does as soon as you treat them is stop thinking about how you have hiccups, and start thinking, in the back of your head, of how you got rid of them.

There are two reasons water may cure hiccups:

1) It changes your breathing pattern, so it may stop the spasms affecting the diaphragm muscle. Holding your breath, or breathing into a paper bag can work because it increases the level of carbon dioxide, suppressing the nerves. So can inhaling and then very slowly exhaling for a few breaths.

2) If your hiccups are being caused by a stomach problem (excess acid, indigestion), a little water may reduce the irritation and stop the triggering of the vagus nerve that is instigating the hiccups. This same effect can make honey, or sugar, or peanut butter an effective cure.

For any cure, the hiccups could come back unless the underlying cause is removed.
