If you seldom drink alcohol and depending on what alcohol you are drinking and your metabolism, you could feel the effects after just one or two drinks. You most likely won't be totally drunk, but your reasoning and logic could be impaired.

There are two different answers to your question.

1. Alcoholics who appear sober are not usually sober. A person with an alcohol addiction has to keep a certain amount of the drug in his or her system in order to be able to function at all. Because of their higher tolerance to alcohol, they may in fact be carrying quite a snootful. Under those conditions, a couple more drinks may push them well into a state of obvious intoxication.

2. This can combine with the situation above. As alcoholics progress in their disease, their bodies begin to lose their ability to process alcohol efficiently. This can lead to the condition mentioned above occurring after very little intake above their "maintenance" dose.

One might add a third factor: alcoholics are people who, by their very nature, don't know the meaning of "enough." Given the kinds of drinks they tend to pour for themselves, or the doubles and triples served by knowing bartenders, they may well be partaking of a bit more of "The Creature" (as our Irish friends call it) than is obvious.

It depends on your age, gender, weight, tolerance, genetics, amount of alcohol in the drinks consumed, and experience. Sometimes nothing, other times the person is completely wasted.
