I don't know where you live, but birch trees are very difficult to grow on a residential lawn. They need a large amount of water and are very sensitive to changes in the air, soil and lawn conditions including all the chemicals you apply to the lawn. it is not possible to tell without knowing more, what happened to your birches, but if the leaves all dried up and dropped off, it is most likely the root system lost its source of water.
