Nothing really caused the grasshopper plague, but I have to answer your question. What happened is that Rocky Mountain grasshoppers, who go a small distance east for food, laid eggs that hatched unusually large grasshoppers. They moved east for food, but they ate it all, so they went farther, which meant going past all the farms. That's how it all started.
