The brain stem is made up of the medulla, pons, and midbrain. Each of these structures has its own function like the pons acts as a bridge between the cerebellum and cerebrum. While the medulla is involved with functions like breathing and swallowing, the midbrain controls functions that pertain to the visual and auditory systems.
The brain stem is the part that controls breathing, it is the stem that allows the respiratory system to work and help you breathe
