A: In sickle cell disease, red blood cells contain an abnormal form of hemoglobin, or hemoglobin S. As the red blood cell deoxygenates, hemoglobin S forms cross-links with other hemoglobin S molecules, and long crystals develop. Crystals continue to form as oxygen is released, and the red cells assume a sickled shape. Sickled red blood cells are inflexible and rigid and cause mechanical obstruction of small arterioles and capillaries, leading to pain and ischemia.
