Having a period means that the lining of the womb is coming away in readiness for a new egg to be released from the ovaries.
When you are pregnant, (when there is a placenta embedded in the lining of the womb) the process of having periods is stopped (or you may lose the baby). Therefore if you are having a true period you should not be pregnant.
However, the hormone levels in some women during pregnancy aren't high enough to prevent the lining of the womb being lost in those areas where the placenta isn't attached. So sometimes a woman will have one episode of bleeding or more in the first month or two of pregnancy (and, rarely, throughout the pregnancy).
