The behavior of children and teens with schizophrenia is different from that of adults with this illness. It is rare for symptoms to develop before age 12. Schizophrenic behavior develops gradually in children and may begin with children talking about strange fears or ideas. Early warning signs of schizophrenia in children include: * Trouble distinguishing dreams from reality * Confusing television or movies with reality * Seeing things and hearing voices that are not real * Confused thinking * Extreme moodiness * A belief that people are "out to get them" * Behaving younger than one's age * Severe anxiety and fearfulness * Severe problems in making and keeping friends Children with schizophrenia must have a complete evaluation. Parents should ask their family physician or pediatrician to refer them to a psychiatrist, preferably a child and adolescent psychiatrist, who is specifically trained and skilled at evaluating, diagnosing, and treating children with schizophrenia.

Is schizophrenia common in children?

No, schizophrenia is quite rare in pre-adolescent children. (early onset schizophrenia) Many pediatricians and psychologists in general practice may never encounter a genuine case. The English term schizophrenia comes from two Greek words that mean "split mind." It was observed around 1908, by a Swiss doctor named Eugen Bleuler, to describe the splitting apart of mental functions that he regarded as the central characteristic of schizophrenia. Most patients are diagnosed in their late teens or early twenties, but the symptoms of schizophrenia can emerge at any age in the life cycle. The male/female ratio in adults is about 1.2:1. Male patients typically have their first acute episode in their early twenties, while female patients are usually closer to age 30 when they are recognized with active symptoms. Schizophrenia is rarely diagnosed in preadolescent children, although patients as young as five or six have been reported. Childhood schizophrenia is at the upper end of the spectrum of severity and shows a greater gender disparity. It affects one or two children in every 10,000; the male/female ratio is 2:1.

A brain scan cannot detect schizophrenia, although many people with schizophrenia do have abnormal brain scans. The brain damage is not apparent until the disease has already progressed far enough to show clear signs of schizophrenia.

How can you tell if someone is skitzofrenic?

The early signs of schizophrenia include deterioration of personal hygiene, forgetfulness, depression, inability to express sadness or joy, inappropriate laughter or crying, social withdrawal, oversleeping or insomnia and developing irrational suspicions. Schizophrenia is often confused with multiple/split personality disorder but they are two very different conditions and schizophrenia is far more common. Schizophrenia is not the development of multiple personalities but, rather, becoming split off from reality.
