Asperger's Syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder. The diagnostic difference between autism and Asperger's Syndrome is that autism has delayed language development while Asperger's Syndrome does not. (However, some people with Asperger's Syndrome displayed delayed language development.) Often, people with the symptoms who have below average intelligence are diagnosed with autism, while those who have average or above average intelligence are diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.

As conditions, Asperger's Syndrome is not worse than autism nor is autism worse than Asperger's Syndrome. Both disorders can range from mild to severe, so one person with autism might have a much more severe case than another person with Asperger's Syndrome, while another person with autism might have a much less severe case than another individual with Asperger's Syndrome. Severe retardation is a significant impairment that occurs in some cases of autism, so that combined with severe symptoms of autism might be worse than cases of Asperger's Syndrome.

Because people with Asperger's Syndrome have average to high intelligence, they are more likely to have developed techniques to avoid or cope with their difficulties and thus make it appear that they have fewer problems. This means that Asperger's Syndrome can go undetected for years, even into adulthood, so the person does not understand why he or she is experiencing so many difficulties.

Bit of a strange question! The term cancer covers a whole range of diseases and really only means cells which are dividing out of control. Cancer's range from being almost always fatal in a short time frame to being almost always treatable or benign (not life threatening even if left untreated). Genetically we probably all have some cancerous cells and generate more each day but our immune systems can recognise a kill them or they may commit suiced by themselves. Autism too ranges in severity and has no clear set boundaries rather professionals refer to the "autistic spectrum". Many specialists believe that all people have at least some autistic traits in their behaviour. So really they have some similarities. Both of them are labels given to people and it can cause phsycological trauma in coming to terms with any label, some people never get over being called "fat" at school. Both can involve a life long battle against symptoms and a great deal of steely determination on the part of the sufferer and their relatives and friends. High functioning people with autism can be "savant" and have a great deal of knowledge in a specialist subject, go to university and get excellent jobs. People who have survived cancer can also find a new thirst for life and be prompted into making great life altering decisions. However, people do die of cancer and no-one dies of being Autistic! Personaly, I'd rather be autistic than have cancer.

Reply to above: I agree with most of what you say, but I have to point out that their Savants who are low functioning too. Rainman for examplle was low functioning.

Obviously Autism is not worse than cancer, suggesting that the two are in any way similar (let alone that Autism is worse than cancer) is grossly offensive and ableist. Autism is a neurological difference, a variation in human kind just like a persons skin colour - imagine asking the question 'Is being black worse than cancer?'. Autism is not worse than a disease, it's ridiculous to even ask this question!

No, but that's because ADHD can alleviate a good amount of disability from medication and autism often involves mental retardation.
