  • A diabetic needs to count all carbohydrates(sugar, too, is a carbohydrate). Foods such as pasta, bread, and fruits have no sugar but are full of carbohydrates and will cause a rise in blood sugar. Even many of the products labeled "sugar-free" and marketed to diabetics contain carbohydrates and are no better for you than the regular product. The healthy amount of carbohydrates is not the same for everyone, diabetic or not. It might be more or less depending on the individual. Check with your doctor and consider meeting with a Diabetes educator for diabetic counselling.
  • Do not ask how many you can have! Ask how few you should have! Do not think that you can play at this or that it is optional. You need to stay away from sugar, products containing sugar, and you need to count and limit all carbohydrates (sugar is a carbohydrate). At first you may crave sugar and carbohydrates but after a while the cravings go if you do it properly. You need to do it properly and you need to look after yourself.
  • The answer is different for each individual. A much more useful answer that may save lives is: Everyone is different. If you are diabetic and worried about harming your body with sugar intake (as you should be), then it is small comfort if your intake is fine for average people but tends to cause high blood sugar for *you* in particular. Rather than researching grams of sugar and asking people (or even doctors) if a certain amount is harmful, you should buy a glucometer (blood glucose meter) at any drugstore, learn to use it, and find out what foods you can eat (on your current medicine and diet) that will keep your blood sugar in the safe ranges. (See the page link, further down this page, listed under Related Links.)
  • Fasting blood sugar under 100 mg/dl (5.5 mmol/L)
  • One hour after meals under 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L)
  • Two hours after meals under 120 mg/dl (6.6 mmol/L)
  • After you have determined how much sugar or carbohydrate you can eat and stay within these boundaries, then and only then are absolute grams of carbohydrate or sugar a useful thing to know. In other words, what is safe for one person is notnecessarily safe for you.

Sugar should be avoided from your diet. Sugar contains no real nutrition. If we never had another teaspoon of dietary sugar in our life, our nutritional health would not be affected in the slightest. So from a health viewpoint sugar is valueless.

All the glucose you body needs is obtained by ingestion of fruits and vegetables which are turned in glucose, energy your body needs.

"The minimum daily requirement is zero" This is for REFINED sugar, like the processed stuff. It is NOT true that you don't need any sugar in your diet. Sure, you might get away with not eating it for a day or two, but we do actually need sugar in our blood. Although there is apparently no daily minimum requirement for refined sugar, you get sugar naturally from fruit. It is not really possible to completely cut out sugar from the diet, and you wouldn't want to do that anyway, it would be dangerous. However, as long as you are a normally healthy person (not got some kind of health problem where you have inadequate blood sugar levels, for example) you could probably easily give up the sort of sugar that most people will be thinking of, the type not found in plants but in ice-cream, chocolate, etc. as long as you ate fruit. I have looked around, and I can't find anything on minimum sugar intake from plants. I'll come back and update if I find something.

The best sugar substitute for diabetics is one that will not raise your blood sugar levels or cause a fluctuation in insulin production or use in your body. There are a number of different products to choose from, including Splenda, Equal, Stevia, SugarTwin, MutraSweet and others. Remember that not all of these products are the same though, and some can be used for cooking while others will not work as well when heated up to higher temperatures.

Diabetics can't ingest sugar, but the substitutes for sugar can make your life sweeter as well.

Normally your doctor will ask you to avoid the sugar. Sugar is not essential for you to eat. But then you can take 5 to 10 grams of sugar each time you take your serving of food. That will give you immediate supply of calories. But then you have to fallow the advice of your physician.

I think it works under the misconception that sugar causes type 2 diabetes. What most people don't realize is that they are just chains of sugar molecules (sugar). Eliminating table sugar, sucrose, while adding bread, potatoes, rice and more will not help.

Now that we don't have that when T2DM is in your family the things you can do is not to eat the boat's carbohydrate load, maintain a healthy weight, make daily exercise a long life routine. These are things that are good for anyone. It is not a guarantee that you will never have diabetes, but it is the right approach.

As a woman there are a few things to consider. Many women suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome. I’m not the type of expert on PCOS, but I do know that it plays a negative role in hormonal balance and often creates insulin resistance. Another thing is gestational diabetes. This happens during pregnancy and when it can end at birth can be a precursor to developing type 2 diabetes.

A common factor in excessive T2DM prior to developing the disease is active hypoglycemia. This happens about 3 hours after eating, shivering, feeling hot or cold, you don't think very well but you have a desire to eat lots of sweets. What often helps in this is a low carb diet with a small amount of peanut butter, peanut butter or cheese about two hours after a meal. Avoid feeding the monster monster with carbs that just make him grow, and you look away.

The body gets more than 100% of the sugar it needs in fruits and vegetables and conversion of starches. There is no need to consume any amount of refined sugars whatsoever.
